I think that after reading the relative bibliography you'll find that in proper sites (and no, we're not talking about doorways here) the most important attributes for an SEO'ed website, are well-written code and meta tags. The backlinks are certainly important and they do give your site an extra boost but there's not much they can do if your site is dodgy. If you don't have quality content it doesn't matter if you come first or last on a web search. You'll have increased bounce rate and the visitors will not focus on your products/services. The whole point of creating a site is to get visitors to access your content (to learn about you, your services or your products) and if it is of good quality then chances are that you'll get more visitors. All SEO guides -including the Google one, which in my opinion is very well written- underline the importance of coding (meta-tags being a part of it) and content. Everything else comes second. Let me repeat the quote from Google that you can see at the end of my post: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings...". I think it's clear enough that, as with any service, one must be careful and wary of the people who claim to be 'specialists'. Words are cheap; our work is all the evidence a client needs.
